Alberta Environmental Appeal Board Hearing,
This is our chance to show our government that many of us care deeply about the decision they will make for this important part of our heritage.
The more of us who turn up the more they will see how important this issue is.
The appeal board hearing is critical for the future of Big Hill Springs Provincial Park and the integrity of its main spring and creek.
IF YOU CAN, please come to Bighill Creek Preservation Society’s public appeal of a provincial Water Act Approval.
YOUR ATTENDANCE MATTERS AND HERE IS WHY:
Despite vigorous opposition by BCPS and nearby landowners, in 2023 Alberta Environment and Parks approved a Water Act application by Mountain Ash Limited Partnership (now Aecon Transportation West Ltd.), for a gravel mine covering 208 acres, 800 meters from the Park’s main spring.
The mine will remove protective filtration soils and gravels, exposing the underlying aquifer, and the Big Hill Spring, to contamination and flow volatility.
The risk is very real and harm would be irreparable.
Since 2021, Bighill Creek Preservation Society has worked tirelessly to protect Big Hill Springs Provincial Park and the Bighill Creek drainage from the many harmful effects of developing up to 2000 acres of gravel mines directly west of the Park.
The most immediate and potentially harmful impact is to the Spring itself.
- This is the spring that created and sustains our unique and much-loved Park.
- This spring also contributes half the flow in Bighill Creek.
We know the gravel mines will operate for 50 or more years and they pose
- serious threats to all of us from fugitive dust and significant noise and
- they will create significant barriers to wildlife movement
The evidence BCPS, with the help of renowned experts, has submitted is posted for your review on our website. Three Appendices are also posted and can be found on the Resources tab of this website.
