Volunteers Remove 80 Year Old Barb Wire from Bighill Creek Area

Bighill Creek Preservation Society volunteers pulled out three strands of 80-year-old barbed wire buried in deep grass over two days this July. The wire was rusted and brittle and hard to extract from the grass and bushes, but they were able to cut it into lengths and roll the pieces into manageable coils. About 610 metres of fencing was cleared from the old Cochrane to Big Hill Springs roadway that traversed the 40-acre Environmental Reserve stewarded by BCPS. Removal of the barb wire has been on BCPS work list for some time and supports the groups mandate for protecting this significant natural area. Trails from Cochrane through the reserve have become increasingly popular as Cochrane’s growth continues apace. Although miserable work for the volunteer crew, they were committed to increasing safety for those who walk the trails and for removing the rusting brittle wire from the natural area.
